It is difficult to believe the zoning issue that threatened to stop every other activity in the country,as long as it is debated, has merely been a People's Democratic Party(PDP) talk. While we could argue they are the ruling party,I always forgot each time that other parties like ACN,ANPP,APGA and CPC were never part of it.
The conclusion we got from PDP on zoning was that it was no more an issue. It had died a natural death.People would no more occupy a position based on tribe, but on capability.
I was therefore bemused to hear that the position of Senate president had been ZONED to North-Central,Speaker to South-West and Secretary To Government of the Federation to the South-East.While,as an easterner,I feel slighted on what has been zoned to us,it would be a case for another day.
My problem is,why zone these positions? Why not leave a level playing field for the best to be put there?Even if whoever gets the position due to zoning were to be the best,it all amounts to double standard saying zoning was dead then.Well,I am not surprised.Nigeria never says a thing and sticks to it.
Talking about double standard,Gen.Ibrahim Babangida, while accusing the PDP of the same crime, committed it himself. The 'rattle snake' of Nigerian politics said with the way things were going, "the nation may have to wait for another generation to get things right."
what? Are you kidding me?Was he not the same man who said, when he wanted to contest the presidential election, that the next generation was not ready to move Nigeria forward?Double standard indeed!
