When Dame Patience Jonathan, the first lady of Nigeria, assumes office in a new dispensation, the people would be happy. Not only would it mean their choice of leadership is secure,it would also give them something to laugh about.
Since her husband took over in May,a lot of people (including a shameless me) have had the chance to laugh over or,in most cases, highlight her every moves. Prominent among them is her inept use of the English language.
Indeed, she would be the happiest of all over hubby's victory. It gives her the opportunity to redeem herself. It would also ensure her critics get bored.By the time she uses the language wrongly for a while,it would no more be a new thing.
However,I do not think we need proper grammatical know-how to judge direction,or the lack of it.As long as she does the right things, then to hell with grammatical perfection.
I also feel people's constant talk on her grammar is an insult on herself and her husband, whom we all love. For the sake of GEJ,let her be. And let us respect her.
In spite of my pleas,I'm sure a lot of people would still see a lot to laugh about her. If that is a price she has to pay for her husband's success, then it is so worth it!
