When President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan declared interest in being elected again, his adversaries, especially from the Northern part of the country, told him how impossible it was. After all, they were yet to complete Yar'adua's tenure. Well, zoning was never in the constitution, we were reminded. It was a mere 'beer-parlour' agreement.
When the time came for a speaker in the House of Representatives to be elected, we were told it was zoned to the South West. That, we realise, had to do with the South East declaring interest in that position. When it seemed we had soft-pedalled, a new speaker was elected. And no, he turned out not to be from the West. Aminu Waziri Tambiwal is a Northerner. Zoning never worked. Not that we never knew.
My grouse is simple. Why deny the South East a position they so much wanted? I don't even want to hear the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is our slot. That is a mere political position, and cannot help the region in anyway. This is unfair. We were cheated. I think so.
