Investigations from reporters revealed that the 469 lawmakers in the National Assembly would earn an estimated 338.6 Billion naira for the four years they would be in office. This does not include other incentives they gain while in office.
This clearly explains why they fight,beat and kill to be in that position.
Most of these members are stark illiterates, who just sit in the House and watch proceedings. I could mention a hundred of them, in a minute with eyes closed. One of my respected lecturers I was lucky to ever learn from once said he, as an Associate Professor, who shuttles through about six Universities, would not earn a tenth of what those guys up there earn in a month, in three years! And he wasn't exaggerating. What then is the wisdom in education? Why not make money,through whatever means, without going to school, and struggle to be a politician, and earn all the money in the world? If, as an illiterate, you could earn what a professor can never dream of getting, why go to school? That is not to say educated people do not exist in the upper house, anyway. But what have they done to distinguish themselves? Nothing at all. It's so sad!
