Now we can all see a team Fergie cannot beat. That's Barcelona. He had been so bullish and confident, prior to the final at Wembley. And all Man United supporters had hope. That has always been his way, anyway. But when the match started, and United went on the backfoot, it was all going to end in a predictable manner. For once, we now know Fergie can be beaten, and lightening could actually strike twice, even when he, or anyone for that matter, is involved. This is indeed a very bitter pill for him, and United players, and indeed myself, to swallow. But we would take to heart the fact that we lost to the best team in the world (so hard for me to admit...).
When Barcelona scored their third goal, Fergie felt so down. I have never seen him so down. Nobody likes losing, especially when you are Fergie.
Nani was bullish. He said United would beat Barcelona next season. Fergie now has a motivation to stay on at United. Knocking Barcelona ''off their f****** perch'' would be that motivation. No matter how impossible that looks, United would be confident 'impossible' never exists in Fergie's world.
Despite the demoralizing loss, Man United would consider this season a success. Heck, they won the league and went all the way to the final.
"This is the best team I've ever lost to in my career," Fergie said, committing the sin of understatement, "but being the second best team in the world isn't a consolation for losing to the best team in the world." he philosophized.
Man United and Fergie know how well to bounce back. You ''can bet your life on that."
